==History== ===Origins=== BookBaby was founded in 2011 by Steven Spatz and Brian Felsen. Its creation was closely tied to [[Disc Makers]], a sister company founded in 1946 by Ivin Ballen, which had a long history of serving independent musicians and filmmakers with manufacturing and distribution services for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. In 2008, Disc Makers acquired [[CD Baby]], an online independent music distributor, in response to the rise of digital music. As digital publishing began to emerge as a major market—driven by the launches of the [[Amazon Kindle]] and [[Apple iPad]]—Apple reportedly approached the Disc Makers/CD Baby team to aggregate content from independent authors for its new book platform, much as CD Baby had done for musicians. This opportunity led directly to the founding of BookBaby. ===Growth and Expansion=== BookBaby launched its print-on-demand (POD) program in 2015 in response to requests from its community of self-published authors. Before this, the company primarily focused on eBook conversion and distribution. Since its founding in 2011, BookBaby has helped thousands of authors realize their potential and has expanded its services to what customers see today. The company also built its own online bookstore. In 2022, online store sales grew significantly, prompting investment in new printing infrastructure. BookBaby installed two new Xeikon SX30000 digital printing presses to expand its full-color printing capacity. BookBaby's in-house design team was named a winner in the AIGA "50 Books | 50 Covers of 2024" competition for the cover of ''Long Term Damage'' by Billy Hanson.
