'''Eva Benefield''' (born c. 2001) is an American content creator, artist, and author based in Charleston, South Carolina. She gained public attention as the daughter of Doug Benefield, a Charleston businessman killed in 2020 by his second wife, Ashley Benefield, in a case widely covered in the media as the "Black Swan Murder." Benefield later built a following on [[TikTok]] discussing grief and the case, founded the apparel brand Ghost Cowboy, and in 2026 published a memoir, ''[[Ghost Girl (Benefield memoir)|Ghost Girl: Surviving the Black Swan Murder—A Memoir]]''.

== Early life ==
Benefield is the daughter of Douglas "Doug" Glass Benefield, a Navy veteran and businessman, and his first wife, Renee Cousar Benefield. In 2015, at around age 15, Benefield discovered her mother dead at the family's Charleston home; Renee had died of an undiagnosed heart condition. Within a year, her father met and married Ashley Byers, a former model and ballet dancer roughly thirty years his junior, after a brief courtship. The couple went on to found a ballet company that later failed, and their marriage deteriorated into a custody dispute over their young daughter, Emerson, born in 2018.

On September 27, 2020, Doug Benefield was shot and killed by Ashley Benefield at her mother's home in Florida during an ongoing custody dispute; Ashley claimed the shooting was in self-defense. The case became known in news coverage as the "Black Swan Murder," a reference to Ashley's ballet background.

Benefield had enrolled at the [[College of Charleston]] but withdrew following her father's death. She later returned to her studies and graduated in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in business, management, and marketing.

After leaving college, Benefield worked in sales at the e-commerce fashion company United Monograms while building an audience on TikTok under the handle @evathefreakindiva. A video in which she discussed "evil stepmothers" went viral, drawing wider attention to her story and to the ongoing criminal case against her stepmother. She has continued to post content about grief, coping with loss, and true crime, and has said she receives messages from viewers who say her videos help them feel less alone.

Benefield testified against Ashley Benefield during her 2024 murder trial. Ashley Benefield was convicted of manslaughter in July 2024. Eva Benefield's story and testimony were featured in television coverage of the case, including NBC's ''Dateline'' ("Deadly Dance," November 2024), CBS's ''48 Hours'', and ABC's ''20/20''.
