Reese Witherspoon
Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon (born March 22, 1976) is an American actress and producer. She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Known for her versatile performances in both comedy and drama, Witherspoon has become a leading figure in Hollywood as both a performer and a powerful producer through her media company Hello Sunshine.
Witherspoon rose to fame with roles in films such as Legally Blonde (2001) and Election (1999). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the 2005 biographical film Walk the Line. She received further acclaim and an Oscar nomination for starring in and producing Wild (2014). In recent years, she has focused on television production and acting, notably in The Morning Show, while championing female-driven stories.

[edit]Witherspoon was born on March 22, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to John Draper Witherspoon, an otolaryngologist and former U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant, and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (née Reese) Witherspoon, a pediatric nurse and professor. She spent her first four years in Wiesbaden, Germany, before the family settled in Nashville, Tennessee.
Raised in a Southern Episcopalian household, Witherspoon attended Harpeth Hall School, an all-girls preparatory school in Nashville. She briefly studied English literature at Stanford University before dropping out to pursue acting full-time.

[edit]Witherspoon began modeling as a child and made her film debut at age 14 in the 1991 coming-of-age drama The Man in the Moon. She gained attention with roles in Freeway (1996), Pleasantville (1998), and Cruel Intentions (1999). Her breakthrough came with the title role in Election (1999), earning her first Golden Globe nomination.
Mainstream Success
[edit]In 2001, Witherspoon starred as Elle Woods in the blockbuster comedy Legally Blonde, a role that became iconic and spawned a sequel in 2003. She achieved critical and commercial success with Walk the Line (2005), portraying June Carter Cash opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. The performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA.
Production and Later Work
[edit]In 2000, Witherspoon founded Type A Films, which later merged into Pacific Standard in 2012. In 2016, she co-founded Hello Sunshine, a media company dedicated to female-centered storytelling. Under Hello Sunshine, she launched Reese's Book Club in 2017, which selects books with women at the center and has turned many picks into successful adaptations.
Notable productions include Big Little Lies (for which she won a Primetime Emmy as producer), Little Fires Everywhere, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Morning Show, in which she also stars.
In 2021, a majority stake in Hello Sunshine was sold to Candle Media in a deal valued at approximately $900 million, with Witherspoon retaining involvement. She has continued producing projects like the 2025 romantic comedy You're Cordially Invited and has expanded into authorship, co-writing the 2025 novel Gone Before Goodbye with Harlan Coben.
Personal Life
[edit]Witherspoon was married to actor Ryan Phillippe from 1999 to 2008; they have two children, Ava and Deacon. She was married to talent agent Jim Toth from 2011 to 2023; they share a son, Tennessee.
She owns the lifestyle brand Draper James, named after her grandparents.
